For every child directly infected by HIV/AIDS, many more are deeply affected and challenged by the loss of parents, siblings, and other family members. The challenges of HIV/AIDS on families are particularly acute for underserved youth and the effects are disproportionate among communities of color.
Aimed to fill a gap in HIV/AIDS support services, since 1988 Sunburst Projects has been providing family support services, including Camp Sunburst, the nation’s first therapeutically designed summer camp program for HIV/AIDS children and their families.
Sacramento Valley AIDS Run/Walk
http://www.sacvalleyaidsrunwalk.org
In 1996, Sacramento was added to the short list of communities nationwide, recognized by the federal government as being devastated by AIDS. Sacramento County Health officials conservatively estimate that more than 4,000 people are infected with HIV in Sacramento. Already 2,000 have lost their lives to AIDS, with more than 2,500 confirmed cases of AIDS being reported in the Capital City area. Unfortunately, local public funding for Sacramento area AIDS organizations continues to decrease, while the case loads and needs of the local AIDS organizations continue to rise. This has created the situation where more local sources of private funds must be established to ensure that existing levels of service are not cutback or eliminated.
HIV/AIDS affects many families, parents and children. Most of the people affected by HIV/AIDS are low income and have no medical benefits, are at risk of homelessness, need assistance with food and transportation and need social support.
In response, the Sacramento Valley AIDS Walk was born. The Run was included in 2005. The Sacramento Valley AIDS Run/Walk(SVARW) is a cooperative effort among all the HIV/AIDS service organizations. The Capital City AIDS Fund (CCAF) serves as the fiscal agent for The Run/Walk. This event has been a successful opportunity for people in the community to support the agencies that provide vital services to people affected and infected with HIV/AIDS. Twelve nonprofit AIDS service agencies from Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo, Placer, El Dorado, Butte, Yuba, Nevada and Alpine counties receive funds from the walk.
The 2008 Run/Walk raised over $250,000. All net funds raised stay within the Sacramento Valley area to provide critical services to those infected by HIV/AIDS.

The Capital City AIDS Fund (CCAF) is a non-profit organization, founded in 1995 to raise money in support of HIV/AIDS services in the Sacramento area. CCAF is governed by an all-volunteer board of directors made up of community leaders including business professionals, media representatives, and government officials. Specifically, CCAF’s activities support a community fund that donates to various Sacramento area non-profit agencies that provide HIV/AIDS services.
CCAF has raised and donated over $1.5 million to Sacramento area HIV/AIDS service providers. Since its inception, CCAF has successfully staged many events including the Capital City AIDS Dance-O-Rama, the Boo Bash, and the high profile event Smash Hits with Elton John and Billie Jean King held in 2001 which raised over $500,000, and the community’s highest profile annual event, the Sacramento Valley AIDS Run Walk.
CCAF also organizes the annual Oscar Night® Sacramento (formerly An Evening with Oscar), one of the social events for the winter season, which is listed in Sacramento Magazine as one of 50 things to do in Sacramento.
